What is the Glycemic Index and why should I care?

June 3rd, 2011

The Glycemic Index is a rating system designed to help us understand how foods effect blood sugar (glucose) levels.  It compares how carbohydrates change our blood glucose in comparison to how those levels are changed by eating sugar.  These changes are measured in the first two hours after eating when our bodies produce insulin in response to the glucose load. So why should you care?  Foods that produce a lower insulin demand, i.e. foods with a low glycemic index, are thought to help lower blood lipids such as  cholesterol and triglycerides. Choosing foods with a lower glycemic index can also help control weight gain as it minimizes the increased fat deposits that accompany insulin surges.  Other factors that should be considered are the foods eaten together in the meal.  High fiber foods have been shown to slow the rise of blood glucose levels thereby reducing the effect of some higher glycemic foods.

So how should you begin to put your newfound knowledge to use?  Why not look at the foods you eat most often and try substituting low glycemic index foods for those with the highest glycemic index.  Examples of foods with high glycemic indexes are:  instant rice (124), corn flakes (119), French fries (107), mashed potatoes (104), ice cream (87).  Examples of low glycemic index foods you could choose instead are:  old fashioned oatmeal (70), whole grain rice (68), sweet potatoes (54), whole grain pasta (40-70), lentils/kidney/baked beans (40-69), apples/bananas/plums (34-69).

Blessings,

Dr. J.

Follow the Mediterranean Diet to Help Reduce Inflammation

May 11th, 2011
The fatty acids in our diet are used to build cell membranes. When our cells are injured these fatty acids are released into the blood stream. Fatty acids from grains, seeds, seed oils (such as corn, safflower, sunflower, and soy), margarine, most salad dressings, most pre-packaged foods, and animals which have been fed grains contain high amounts of omega-6 fatty acids. These omega-6s have been shown to be pro-inflammatory i.e. they increase inflammation. The typical American diet contains foods high in omega-6s compared to anti-inflammatory omega-3s. While many authorities believe we should consume these fatty acids in a ratio of 1:1 Americans often consume them in a ration of 6:1—six times as many omega-6s as omega-3s. This has been shown to increase the likelihood of heart disease and stroke, cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s disease, and degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis.
Therefore, we should consider changing our ways. One good alternative is the traditional Mediterranean Diet. Mediterranean people typically eat a diet that contains a lot of “good” fats. They use monounsaturated fats found in olive oil, nuts, and avocados. They eat plenty of fatty fish like salmon, tuna, sardines, and trout. They tend to eat a lot of fresh vegetable and fruits. Recent studies have shown that such a diet significantly lowers the risks of cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and the pre-diabetic condition called metabolic syndrome. You should also consider supplements such as molecularly distilled fish oil which is high in omega-3s and has had any impurities removed. The one I recommend is enteric coated so the capsule doesn’t dissolve until it passed through the stomach. This reduces or eliminates any fishy after-taste.
Yours in good health,
Dr. J.

Helpful Hints for Reducing Your Exposure to Chemical Toxins_2

March 21st, 2011

Continuing the theme of helping to reduce your exposure to chemical toxins, here are some other suggestions:

Some beauty and personal care products contain chemical ingredients that may cause skin and/or hormonal reactions.  Look for products that do not contain ingredients like mercury, aluminum, lead, toluene, formaldehyde, parabens, pthlates, or triclosan.  Instead switch to natural cosmetics and personal care products whenever possible.

Household cleaners may contain toxic chemicals.  Drain, oven, and toilet bowl cleaners are some of the worst.  Try finding effective natural alternatives that use white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, castile soap, baking soda, lemon juice, or other environmentally friendly products.

Many dry cleaning chemicals contain hormone disrupting nonylphenol and nonylphenol ethoxylates.  For garments that require dry cleaning, look for an environmentally friendly dry cleaning service and remove garments from the plastic bags for a few hours before wearing them to let them air out.

As we enter lawn care season consider this.  Mowing, watering, and fertilizing lawns contribute to approximately 2% of our nation’s fossil-fuel consumption and 10% of its air pollution.  Many chemical lawn treatments use a weed killer called atrazine that is a known endocrine (hormone) disruptor.  Why not look for environmentally friendly alternatives?

Helpful Hints for Reducing Your Exposure to Chemical Toxins

February 25th, 2011

Some chemicals are known endocrine disruptors.  They can affect your hormone balance and your metabolism. To improve your long-term health, why not eliminate the ones you can?

Start by reducing the processed foods in your diet. Then begin to remove toxins from your home also.

Cooking-oil bottles, plastic wrap, microwaveable ovenware, Styrofoam containers, and hard-plastic drinking bottles  can contain  polyvinyl chloride (V or PVC), polystyrene (PS,), and polycarbonate (PC).

Instead use glass or cardboard packaging and storage,  switch to reusable stainless steel drinking bottles and non-plastic microwaveable containers.  Avoid microwaving food in plastic containers of any type.

Don’t us Antibacterial soaps on a regular basis.  They contain triclosan which kills the good bacteria as well as the bad and can lead to antibiotic resistant strains. Look for alternatives that use natural soaps and do not contain triclosan or phosphates.

Non-stick cookware has been known to leach chemicals into the food when it is heated, especially if the surface has been scratched. These chemicals can affect  your immune system, endocrine system, your liver or your thyroid.  Choose glass or stainless steel instead.

Asthma Chiropractor Care

February 25th, 2011

Asthma, or hyperactive airways, is a reversible obstructive respiratory disorder. Asthma can become status asthmaticus, a life-threatening condition, if it is not managed properly.

A characteristic of asthma is a difficulty breathing, which is caused by a spastic contraction of the muscles in the bronchiole. According to Dr. William Johnson DC, foreign particles in the air also cause asthmatic reactions to occur, since the bronchioles are hypersensitive. In younger patients, under age 30 years, the asthma in about 70 percent is caused by allergic hypersensitivity. Asthma in older people is usually caused by non-allergic irritants, like smog, for example. A person with asthma can usually inhale normally, but has a hard time exhaling.

You can maintain wellness in your life and be generally free of symptoms if you have regular treatments for asthma. For this reason, it is a must to keep up with your GA asthma treatment, even when you’re not experiencing any symptoms. Furthermore, it is highly important to stay away from asthma causing factors like smoke, cold air, and smog. You also want to avoid your asthma inducers such as allergies and viruses. Asthma can be controlled with proper treatment, so make sure to keep up with them.

An alternative form of care for your asthma is chiropractic; contact your Fort Oglethorpe doctor of chiropractic to find out more about asthma treatment.

Back Pains From Depression

December 21st, 2010

It is very likely that those who have chronic back pain or intense back pain may be experiencing depression as well. However, Dr. Linda Carroll, of the University of Alberta, published a study in 2004 that proved the reverse can happen too; Dr. William Johnson DC agrees. Depression can be a risk factor for the onset of severe neck and low-back pain. People suffering from depression are more likely to experience immobilizing low-back and neck pains than those who are not depressed – by about four times – as shown in Dr. Carroll’s studies.

At least 8 million people in the United States, GA included, suffer from depression; oftentimes, it is associated with a diminished production of norepinephrine or serotonin, or both, in the body.

Common symptoms among people dealing with depression include misery, unhappiness, grief, and despair. Severe insomnia, a loss of appetite, and a decreased sex drive are among the other sides of depression. In spite of the depression, psychomotor agitation is frequently related to these signs of depression.

Some patients with mental depression in Fort Oglethorpe alternate between depression and mania, which is called either bipolar disorder or manic-depressive psychosis.

The doctor of chiropractic will generally administer orthopaedic and neurological exams, as well as go through your health history. Depending on your condition, your chiropractor from Pain Relief Center will then create a custom-tailored treatment regimen.

Tennis Elbow Therapy Fort Oglethorpe

December 9th, 2010

Fort Oglethorpe tennis elbow, or Lateral Epicondylitis, is the most common illness that afflicts the upper body.

But tennis players cannot lay full claim to tennis elbow. Tennis elbow is caused by excessive strain in the muscles of the forearm (wrist extensor group) which is commonly seen in tennis players, carpenters, secretaries, manual laborers and many more professions. So one can say that tennis elbow can arise from any activity that calls for repetitive wrist extension, says Dr. William Johnson DC. 90% of patients with tennis elbow will feel the focus of their pain at the tendo periosteal junction where the common extensor tendon arises from (the outer region of the elbow). Some patients with tennis elbow will feel pain radiating to the back of the forearm and wrist area.

GA tennis elbow takes a long time to recuperate because of the absence of a tendon sheath and this can be difficult for the patient. The common extensor origin is more like a muscle than a tendon, but its blood supply is poor, so It cannot derive nutrition from the fluid found in the tendon sheath.

Your Chiropractor at Pain Relief Center will perform a thorough history and examination including orthopaedic and neurological testing to determine the extent of your tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis). After which they will design a therapeutic regimen specifically suited to your case.

Fort Oglethorpe Vertigo Dizziness Treatment

November 24th, 2010

Vertigo is the illusion of movement of the body or of the environment. The percepted movement that occurs with vertigo is unidirectional and rotational.

There is a small distinction with the perception of this motion, says Dr. William Johnson DC. Objective vertigo is described as the sensation of the environment spinning around the patient whereas in subjective vertigo, it is the patient who feels he is turning around his surroundings.

Vertigo and dizziness can be differentiated by significant symptoms. When the patient in GA describes his feelings as a loss of balance, light-headedness or nausea but there is no motion perception, he is describing dizziness.

Your Fort Oglethorpe Chiropractor will perform a thorough history and examination including orthopaedic and neurological testing to determine the true cause of your vertigo and dizziness. Basing on the results, they will create a plan of management suited specifically to your case.

Neck Pain Care Fort Oglethorpe

November 17th, 2010

At any point in time, the prevalence of neck pain is about 12% for the adult female population and 9% for the adult male population. The occurrence of Fort Oglethorpe neck pain is almost half as much as the occurrence of back pain. Approximately 45% of the working population will have one attack of a stiff neck, and most of those affected will not miss much work with neck pain as they do with back pain. As the neck naturally becomes more and more flexible, there is a loss in stability and protection. Therefore there are many delicate structures that can become irritated resulting in neck pain.

Neck pain can be used interchangeably with pain in the shoulder and shoulder pain can sometimes be pain in the neck. The most common causes of neck pain and shoulder pain are injuries to the soft tissues including the muscles, tendons and ligaments, says Dr. William Johnson DC. Whiplash can cause these injuries. Irritation from arthritis in the neck area or upper spine can create pain that ranges from the neck to shoulders. Finally, conditions involving the spinal cord, heart and lungs can cause neck pain and shoulder pain.

In order to determine the true cause of your neck pain, the chiropractor GA will conduct a thorough examination of your neck. The structures to be looked at include: the carotid arteries, vertebral arteries, spinal cord (nerves), facet joints, supporting ligaments, capsules, muscles and the discs.
